As the rest of the 6th District has been focused on deciding who should be the nominee for our respective parties, our very own Michele Bachmann decided once again to vote with the ultra-minority. This time, she essentially spat in the eye of both the mentally ill and 2nd District Congressman Jim Ramstad by voting against H.R. 4848.
CQ TODAY MIDDAY UPDATE
Feb. 7, 2008 – 2:10 p.m.
House Passes Extension of Mental Health Benefits LawPassed by 384-23, the temporary measure would extend a 1996 law that bans health plans that offer mental health coverage from setting different lifetime or annual dollar limits for such treatment than those imposed for treatment of other illnesses.
Bachmann joined only 22 of her colleagues in sending a message to the mentally ill in this country that they do not deserve the parity in coverage offered by this bill and by extension would not deserve a broader measure drafted by our very own Jim Ramstad and Rhode Island Congressman Patrick Kennedy. This vote, while not necessarily surprising, should outrage local Psychologists (even ones who work in local school districts) and Psychiatrists who know full well that mental illness is equal in scope and severity to physical illness and should therefore be treated with the same health coverage.
