Republican spokesperson and publisher of Politics in Minnesota, Sarah Janecek, is on record with some predictions for Tuesday and they don't look good. If these predictions come to pass, then there will only be two Republicans left in the delegation Minnesota sends to Congress. Only Norm Coleman and John Kline will remain in this post 2008 election world.

On the race in the 3rd District:

DFLer Ashwin Madia narrowly bests GOP former Rep. Erik Paulsen mostly because the 3rd District Republican party scared better, more ideologically moderate GOP candidates out of the race. This is a painful loss for the state GOP which has proudly held this seat for decades with strong, smart, social issues-moderate leadership in Bill Frenzel and Jim Ramstad.

This is a clear shot at the choice of Erik Paulsen who is clearly not in the mold of moderate, Jim Ramstad. Paulsen represents the continued race to the right that has so damaged the Republican Party in Minnesota. Talking to people that know Ramstad well, it is clear that it is the race to the right which drove Ramstad to leave.

Janecek adds this caveat:

The good news for Republicans going forward is that because the Democratic National Congressional Committee spent so much time and effort on this race, Madia will be beholden to casting liberal party-line votes, making 2010 an attractive run for Republicans who opted out in 2008.

Not to bust the chops of Ms. Janecek but I believe it is the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

On the race in the 6th District:
DFL challenger Elwyn Tinklenberg beats one-term GOP incumbent U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann and sends Chris Matthews a bottle of Dom. What were Bachmann's advisers thinking by allowing her to go on MSNBC with Matthews? What was Bachmann thinking by using "anti-American" in her words? Channeling former GOP WI Sen. Joseph McCarthy was red meat on a platter for the left. Let the 2010 GOP fun begin on who will run against Tinklenberg in a seat he should never have won.
I make no predictions but Republicans appear to be bracing for another bad night in Minnesota politics!

On the Madia for Congress Youtube Page, the campaign has a new ad entitled "Ready for Change". On the heels of the MTV appearance, this one highlights more of what makes this guy an impressive candidate for office.

H/T to Chris Truscott for getting the online video:

Ashwin Madia, DFL candidate running in the 3rd Congressional District, made an appearance on MTV to talk about himself and his run for Congress. Every time I hear this guy speak I like him more and more:

Now, the question is: When is Elwyn Tinklenberg going to appear on MTV? C'mon, Tink, think about it!

Over at a site entitled Democrats Work, there is currently a contest going on in which General Wesley Clark will be visiting a congressional district to do a community service project with the Democrat running for office in that district. Here in Minnesota there are two candidates from which to choose: Ashwin Madia and Elwyn Tinklenberg. One has to wonder why there is no Steve Sarvi choice. So, for whom will you vote?

Will you vote for Madia running in the 3rd district or Tinklenberg running in the 6th district? While I would love to get some coverage from Clark in the 6th district the reality is that the 3rd district is far more winnable. Given that reality, it would seem far more useful to throw your support to Madia who is going to need to run an impressive campaign in order to take this seat. On the other hand, a figure such as Wesley Clark might play well in the 6th district and energize a Democratic electorate that seems to be fairly ambivalent about Tinklenberg.

The four main goals of Democrats Work:

  • Make tangible contributions to increase the visibility of Democrats at the local level. We want to show our neighbors that Democrats get things done, making improvements that people can point to and say: "The Democrats did that for this community." We associate Democrats with service so when there is a need in the community, people will say, “Call the Democrats, they always have people who can help.”
  • Engage the grassroots during non-election time to keep folks active and involved. Instead of asking people to get involved every two or four years, we tap into that energy year-round and “keep the band together.”
  • Reach out to people who might not otherwise get involved in purely “political” activities, but share our values. Not everyone wants to hand out campaign literature or phone bank or even wants to work for a particular candidate, but they are willing to paint a school or clean up a park with their friends.
  • Build a unified stable of motivated and easily mobilized volunteers who can help candidates win elections.
Go and vote for the candidate of your choice here!

I encourage you to use the comment section as a way to convince myself and others who the better Minnesota choice would be for a Wesley Clark visit.

Blue Man did a great job (here, here, and here) of providing post CD3 Convention coverage through video:

    The pre-convention rally for Madia:

Ashwin Madia pumping up the pre-convention crowd:

    The excitement of a convention:

    Ashwin Madia speaking to delegates:

I have to admit, this is not a race I have been following. From the information I have seen flowing out of Blue Man and others it looks like Minnesota's 3rd Congressional District has a great candidate in Madia. While the 3rd District is out of my way, I just might be traveling down there to help Blue Man and Madia turn the district DFL. Congratulations, Mr. Madia!
