From the White House Blog:

During the address, the President asks that small business owners and employees give us their comments and questions on the report. What are your experiences with health care as somebody involved in small business, and what are your thoughts and questions on the new CEA report in light of those experiences?
Give us your response here through WhiteHouse.gov, or if you are a member of the social network LinkedIn, go take part in the discussion CEA Chair Christina Romer initiated there. Romer will be answering some of most penetrating responses in a live video discussion on Wednesday at 3:00 PM EDT.

Given that I have not kept up with the weekly address, check out the ones you may have missed:
I will try to keep up in the future...

The Birthers, a small collection of conspiracy theorists desperate to delegitimize the Presidency of Barack Obama have been busy creating their own citizen grand jury with the hope of bringing charges against the President and presumably removing him from office.

You wanted the BIG time Obama — well, you got your wish from the Patriots at American Grand Jury. 172 Grand Jury members worked night and day for 10 days in session to hand down the presentments against our arrogant Usurper.

While I would not normally post on something as ludicrous as this motley collection of fools, it seems as though they have been in contact with our very own Michele Bachmann. Apparently, Bachmann was issued a "presentment" by the group:

5:44pm Presentments delivered to Senate Minority Leader McConnell, TX Senators Hutchinson and Cornyn, Ron Paul, and Michelle Bachmann [Emphasis Mine]

It begs the question: Why Bachmann? While the others hold some high level position or another, Bachmann stands out as a relatively low level Congressperson. Do these people believe that Bachmann is a sympathetic ear? IS Bachmann a sympathetic ear?

I sent off some emails and will update accordingly...
As the health care debate continues to rage between the forces who firmly believe in a single payer system versus those who stand on the side of an entirely free market system, there has been little progress in actually accomplishing anything of substance. That being said, President Obama is staking a good deal of his political capital on producing some actual reform.

In his weekly address, he gives some hints at the kind of reform he is looking towards. The biggest of these being lowered cost, improved coverage, and consumer choice. What that all means and how that all works remains to be seen.

Over the past two weeks, the Progressive Caucus has been holding its special order hour specifically on the subject of health care and the reform of the system. Minnesota Representative, Keith Ellison, spoke as part of that group:

More towards the middle of the spectrum, Dr. Maureen Reed who is seeking the DFL and Independence Party endorsements to run against Michele Bachmann spoke about the need to stop being wedded to a solution and actually find a solution.

One thing is clear, whatever your feelings are about health care and the need for reform, the issue will be at the forefront of the national debate for some time to come.

With the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to sit on the United States Supreme Court, the conservative response has been nothing short of an apoplectic temper tantrum. Throwing out nearly every baseless and out of context attack they can think of, they are seeking to demonize Sotomayor but are at the same time, whether intentionally or unintentionally, demonizing every minority that could help them regain power in Washington. So much for that whole return to power thing...

President Obama used his weekly address to talk about the Sotomayor nomination:

The President discusses the breadth and depth of experience held by his nominee for the Supreme Court. In the course of a life that began in a housing project in the South Bronx and brought her to the pinnacle of her profession, Judge Sonia Sotomayor accumulated more experience on the federal bench than any incoming Supreme Court Justice in the past 100 years, touching nearly every aspect of our legal system.

It's always fun to venture over to the blog owned and controlled by Professor Banaian. Typically, you will find some relatively witty connection between real life and economics but every once in awhile you catch that special day when his co-contributor "Janet" pipes in to write a post. These are the special days because it is then that we get to peer into the crazy...

Today was no different as "Janet" unveils the new meme with which to defeat the scourge of our times, President Obama. As if it wasn't bad enough that this commie pinko used a teleprompter device every time he turns around NOW he will not look us in the EYE and that means he is a super sinister liar!

This morning while at my fitness center, I watched all 12 minutes or so of Mr. Obama's performance on his takeover of the auto industry. Not once did Mr. Obama look the camera straight in the eye. Never did he talk directly to us, his American audience. The entire speech was given while Mr. Obama looked from side to side.

Why doesn't he talk to the camera directly, as did Presidents Reagan and Bush? Why is Obama afraid to look straight ahead? He has given enough speeches (written and printed for him) that fear of speaking is not an excuse.

That BASTARD! Those shifty eyes and noncommittal glances. Who could possibly trust a guy who reads from a teleprompter AND shifts his head from left to right and back again. I mean when George W. Bush was lying to us about Saddam Hussein and WMD and connections to Al Qaeda he would AT LEAST look us in the eye. You see, we don't so much care about the truth or fiction stuff but for the love of everything holy please look us in the eyes when you do it!

This new meme will undoubtedly cut Obama to his core...

President Obama discusses both the current need to stimulate the economy as well as the long term need to show fiscal discipline by examining every part of the budget in every department. One of the more interesting pieces of this address is the idea to hear from the workforce itself to find new and improved things that work. By "looking for ideas from the bottom up", Obama is acknowledging that the people that do the daily business in these programs know best how to make those programs more efficient and cost effective.

From the White House Blog:

Listing off several specific changes he intends to bring, he describes his guiding principle: "To help build a new foundation for the 21st century, we need to reform our government so that it is more efficient, more transparent, and more creative. That will demand new thinking and a new sense of responsibility for every dollar that is spent."

The President discusses the measures he is taking to cut wasteful spending in our government. I have always been of the belief that if governed properly the government can be a force for good. In fact, it is this belief that drives my political ideology. I refuse to believe that the government is bad in every case and can never be a useful tool for improving our country.

From the White House Blog:

With the process of going through the budget line by line in full swing, the President uses his Weekly Address to give some examples, big and small, of how the Administration is working to cut costs and eliminate waste. The President also announces two new key appointments, Jeffrey Zients as Chief Performance Officer and Aneesh Chopra as Chief Technology Officer, who will be invaluable in streamlining the way government functions through efficiency and innovation.

The President discusses the global challenges we face and the steps he has taken and will be taking in order to address those challenges. From the White House Blog:

Recapping his trip, though, it is clear just how much opportunity lies in reshaping America’s relationships around the world. On everything from turning our economy around -- which shed hundreds of thousands more jobs last month -- to ending the threat of nuclear arms, "The only way forward is through shared and persistent efforts to combat fear and want wherever they exist."

In this weekly address, President Obama addresses the flood situation currently taking place up and down the Red River Valley. As part of his address he highlights the call to service that has driven people to help fight back the rising waters of the river. For more information and current updates on the flood situation, I would encourage readers to follow @fargofloodstage, @redriveratfargo, & @egffloodstage on Twitter. Also, the best coverage online that I have seen has come from Minnesota Public Radio, Bob Collins NewsCut Blog, and The Uptake.

From the White House Blog:

"In the Fargodome, thousands of people gathered not to watch a football game or a rodeo, but to fill sandbags. Volunteers filled 2.5 million of them in just five days, working against the clock, day and night, with tired arms and aching backs. Others braved freezing temperatures, gusting winds, and falling snow to build levees along the river’s banks to help protect against waters that have exceeded record levels."

President Obama touts one of the proper functions of government as keeping our food supplies safe in his most recent weekly address. To fulfill this mission, he nominated Dr. Margaret Hamburg as the head of the Food & Drug Administration.

From the White House Blog:

"We are a nation built on the strength of individual initiative. But there are certain things that we can't do on our own. There are certain things that only a government can do. And one of those things is ensuring that the foods we eat, and the medicines we take, are safe and don't cause us harm."

In the weekly address, President Obama discussed the release of his first budget and the current economic picture. From restructuring mortgages to jump starting lending to making the initial investments in health care reform, Obama is taking on the tall task of fixing the economy that he inherited.

From the White House:

Let us hope that the voices who wish for failure are drowned out by the sensible amongst us who would like to find actual solutions to actual problems.

In the weekly address for Saturday, February 7, 2009, President Barack Obama commends the progress the Senate has made on moving the recovery plan forward, and urged its completion.

I am all for finding bipartisan support but it has become increasingly clear that the Republican Party is more interested in digging in its heals and demanding all while offering nothing but the same solutions which helped to create this particular mess. At some point we may have to resign ourselves to fixing the problems of this nation without them.

I pondered for some time what to do in my classroom for Inauguration Day. It didn't seem appropriate for me to simply turn the television on, sit back, and let a day slip through my fingers without some greater lesson being taught. So, as a class we began by examining the oath of office as laid out in the Constitution:

Oath of Office
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Actually, after today my students probably knew the wording of the oath better than Chief Justice John Roberts (*wink*). As a class we took the words and rewrote the oath using synonyms. Full Disclosure: That idea was borrowed from other sources...

Rather than simply focusing on the speech of Barack Obama, we took a look at the Inaugural Addresses of five of our most famous President's. However, 8th graders are not well suited to reading and understanding the full context of these speeches so I plugged each of them into wordle. This allowed students to examine the broad themes and main ideas of the speeches rather than get bogged down in detailed language.

Students were asked to examine the word clouds without knowing what President or even what time period from which they originated. As they looked over each one their task was to discover and write about the commonalities running through each, discover and write about the differences running through each, and finally write about anything unique they found within each speech.

President ?

President ?

President ?

President ?

President ?
While I wish I had more time to really dig into this activity, the kids did a great job finding the basic themes that ran through the speeches of these five important President's. They were even able to figure out which speech belonged to which President for three out of the five. You can try out this activity in the comment section...

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get to looking at some of the modern addresses which have been captured for posterity. Check them out for yourself:

And today, Barack Obama...

I am particularly interested in hearing more about the investments to be made in school buildings. It seems to me a novel idea worth exploring, that the federal government perhaps rethink its role in public education as one of providing the space for learning rather than defining what learning standards are required within that space.

From Politico:

Obama said his plan would provide jobs in the short term and would stimulate long-term economic growth by upgrading classroom technology, making public buildings more energy-efficient and reforming the health care system.

"[T]his plan must be designed in a new way — we can't just fall into the old Washington habit of throwing money at the problem. We must make strategic investments that will serve as a down payment on our long-term economic future," he said. "We must demand vigorous oversight and strict accountability for achieving results. And we must restore fiscal responsibility and make the tough choices so that as the economy recovers, the deficit starts to come down."
