This week, Keith Ellison spent some time on the floor of the House of Representatives discussing the goals and beliefs of the Progressive Caucus. Specifically, he discussed a report 'Reining in the Imperial Presidency' and a bill (HR 104) that would investigate former President George W. Bush over issues of torture and illegal wire tapping.

There is established the National Commission on Presidential War Powers and Civil Liberties (hereinafter in this Act referred to as the `Commission') to investigate the broad range of policies of the Administration of President George W. Bush that were undertaken under claims of unreviewable war powers, including detention by the United States Armed Forces and the intelligence community, the use by the United States Armed Forces or the intelligence community of enhanced interrogation techniques or interrogation techniques not authorized by the Uniform Code of Military Justice, `ghosting' or other policies intended to conceal the fact that an individual has been captured or detained, extraordinary rendition, domestic warrantless electronic surveillance, and other policies that the Commission may determine to be relevant to its investigation (hereinafter in this Act referred to as `the activities').

I pondered for some time what to do in my classroom for Inauguration Day. It didn't seem appropriate for me to simply turn the television on, sit back, and let a day slip through my fingers without some greater lesson being taught. So, as a class we began by examining the oath of office as laid out in the Constitution:

Oath of Office
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Actually, after today my students probably knew the wording of the oath better than Chief Justice John Roberts (*wink*). As a class we took the words and rewrote the oath using synonyms. Full Disclosure: That idea was borrowed from other sources...

Rather than simply focusing on the speech of Barack Obama, we took a look at the Inaugural Addresses of five of our most famous President's. However, 8th graders are not well suited to reading and understanding the full context of these speeches so I plugged each of them into wordle. This allowed students to examine the broad themes and main ideas of the speeches rather than get bogged down in detailed language.

Students were asked to examine the word clouds without knowing what President or even what time period from which they originated. As they looked over each one their task was to discover and write about the commonalities running through each, discover and write about the differences running through each, and finally write about anything unique they found within each speech.

President ?

President ?

President ?

President ?

President ?
While I wish I had more time to really dig into this activity, the kids did a great job finding the basic themes that ran through the speeches of these five important President's. They were even able to figure out which speech belonged to which President for three out of the five. You can try out this activity in the comment section...

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get to looking at some of the modern addresses which have been captured for posterity. Check them out for yourself:

And today, Barack Obama...

Below you will find a word picture of the farewell addresses of President Bush and President Clinton. Similarities? Differences?

The biggest difference I noticed is the prominence of words such as prosperity and economy in the Clinton address although I cannot imagine why they are missing from the Bush address...

While I do not personally believe it is the end times, there are moments in this world that boggle the mind so completely that you have to wonder...

George W. Bush wins International Medal of Peace!

Now that you have regained consciousness, there is a caveat. Peace is actually an acronym that stands for "Promotion of reconciliation, Equipping servant leaders, Assisting the poor, Caring for the sick, and Educating the next generation".

Jeff Rosenberg wrote about the doublespeak involved in this award yesterday:

But come on, medal of peace? For George W. Bush, the man who crammed the square peg of the war on Iraq into the round peg of the war on terror?

A medal for fighting global AIDS, sure. A medal for world health, sure. Any medal with any variation of the word PEACE? Not on your life! Certainly a medal of peace means the end is nie...

John McCain wants us to believe that when he said the "fundamentals of our economy are strong" he meant the workers in this country. We may be strong but after nine months of job losses I don't know how much more strength we have left:

The media has been increasingly mentioning Delaware Senator, Joe Biden as the potential VP pick for Barack Obama. While some in my own party are less than thrilled about this choice, I couldn't be happier that Obama may choose Biden. He was my first pick to be the Presidential nominee and I truly believe he is one of the brightest public servants we have in this country:

WHY Joe Biden?

First, Senator Biden is as strong a Union (A 91% rating from the NEA and a 100% rating from the AFL-CIO) supporter as any one could possibly be. As an educator I am always concerned about the tactics used by many Republicans that work tirelessly to chip away and eventually abolish the teachers unions that provide the relatively meager wage I currently enjoy.

Second, and far less calculated, is the sense of the man. When I see and listen to Joe Biden I see a man I would be proud to call my President. While others may disagree, I see a father figure or amusing uncle that always seems to have a bit of advice (probably good) to impart to you. I see a man of strength that Republicans would have a hard time portraying as a weak liberal as they are prone to do. This strength is evident in his passion, his eloquence, and yes, even in his loquaciousness!

Third, and very much related to the second, is his solution for the debacle that it is this Administrations handling of the war in Iraq. He cannot be pinned with the label of offering no plan for success because his plan is apparent and has even been parroted by at least one of the Republican hopefuls. The creation of a Federal System in Iraq may be the only way to quell sectarian violence at the same time keeping the country from breaking apart or falling into utter anarchy. As of right now it is the main thrust of my support for Joe Biden as I have yet to hear anything more than "stay the course" from this Administration (which, by the way, is not a solution!) and what appears to many as a pullout without a contingency for cleaning up the mess we created from the Democrats.

Beyond the calculations of geography, because we all know that Delaware is going to vote Democrat, Biden brings a couple of very important features to the ticket that compliment Obama:

1. Biden as policy wonk to Obama's vision: Barack Obama is perhaps the best speaker of this generation and lays out a vision of the United States that is appealing to a vast swath of the American public. When you couple that with the ability of Joe Biden to get into the minutae of issues and come to common sense solutions you have a lethal combination that might be able to truly solve the pressing issues of our day. Specifically, on the issue of Iraq, Biden remains the only person to get to the heart of the problem and offer a solution that will bring our troops home and keep Iraq from descending into chaos.

2. Biden as attack dog: There are few politicians out there who can match the beat down skills of Senator Joe Biden. During the primaries, Biden was more than willing to smack down people such as Rudy Giuliani and President Bush and highlight their utter incompetence. Unfortunately, during the past couple of election cycles we have not had someone willing to get down into the muck where Republicans spend their entire existence and match them blow for blow. While Obama has made some attacks on McCain, a Biden partnership could turn those few jabs into a barrage the likes of which we have not seen in a very long time.

Of all the choices Barack Obama could make to turn the Democratic ticket into an unstoppable force, the right choice has to be Joe Biden.

In a recent interview, President Bush indicated that he had given up golf due to the Iraq War. I cannot tell you how saddened we all feel, Mr. President, that you were forced to pay so high a price for our country. It takes a big man to make the ultimate sacrifice for his country and forgo hitting a tiny white ball with a long metal stick.

Your sacrifice gives me butterflies in my stomach or perhaps I am about to throw up, it is hard to tell anymore.

Well if that wasn't one of the most non-inspirational speeches in modern history, I don't know what was. From a bitter chastising over congressional earmarks despite having approved every bloated bill the Republicans sent him to threatening a country to end a nuclear program his own NIE already acknowledged has been suspended, George W. Bush was a man without a message and without a clear sense of why so many people are dissatisfied with his leadership. But, I digress...

Bob Olson came out with this response:

ANOKA—Bob Olson, a DFL candidate in the 6th Congressional District, released the following statement in response to President George W. Bush's State of the Union address:

"On a day when five troops were killed in Iraq, President Bush failed to deliver the exit plan our soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines have earned.

"On a day when 9 million children went uninsured, President Bush failed to deliver health care coverage for the most vulnerable among us.

"On a day when millions of working families worried about losing their homes, President Bush failed to deliver a plan to end the agony.

"On a day when his country needed him most, President Bush failed the great test of leadership again."

Blue Man, inspired by the drinking game, has come up with an excellent idea for watching the State of the Union Address tonight.

Bluewoman and I may try this tonight...

One exception though...

Every time the camera shows....your congressman/woman: the site encourages you to pat yourself on the back...

Those of us in the 6th are going to cringe, hoping that they have doubled the secret service presence for the President's grand entrance and exit.

If you want a positive action though, go ahead and send Bob Olson for Congress $10 everytime you see Congresswoman Bachmann tonight, both at the State of the Union and through local news coverage of Bachmann's actions tonight.
To add to the fun I would suggest that each time the President says nucular rather than nuclear, we send an additional $5 to our favorite Presidential candidates!
A new study out finds that there were upwards of 935 "false statements" (here in the world of reality we tend to call those LIES!) were told by this administration.

Study: False statements preceded war

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A study by two nonprofit journalism organizations found that President Bush and top administration officials issued hundreds of false statements about the national security threat from Iraq in the two years following the 2001 terrorist attacks.

...

Named in the study along with Bush were top officials of the administration during the period studied: Vice President Dick Cheney, national security adviser Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz and White House press secretaries Ari Fleischer and Scott McClellan.

Bush led with 259 false statements, 231 about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and 28 about Iraq's links to al-Qaida, the study found. That was second only to Powell's 244 false statements about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and 10 about Iraq and al-Qaida.

Bob Olson put out a press release responding to this lack of honesty and even took his own party to task for not having the guts to stand up and demand real evidence before allowing this administration to rush us into a war.

Olson: Congress Should Have Confronted Bush on 'Cycle of Lies'

ANOKA—Bob Olson, a DFL candidate in the 6th Congressional District, released the following statement in response to a report that the Bush administration made at least 935 inaccurate statements about Iraq in the two years following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

"Because too many politicians were unwilling to stand up to this administration and its endless cycle of lies, we've lost 3,931 troops and hundreds of billions of dollars in a war we never should have started.

"I am the only candidate of either party in the 6th District race who opposed this war from the very beginning. To go after Saddam Hussein and Iraq after 9/11 made as much sense to me as attacking India after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. This war has been a wasteful distraction in the real war on terrorism.

"As your congressman, I will never cave in the face of unnecessary warmongering by any president, regardless of his or her party. If political courage costs me an election, that's fine. At least I'll be able to sleep at night."

Despite all the rhetoric over the past year from conservatives about returning to their roots of smaller government and fiscal responsibility, it appears as though they secretly still long for the pork. A story from the Washington Times (that liberal rag!) lays out the obvious hypocrisies:

The Senate's two biggest sponsors of this year's pet spending projects are Mr. Stevens of Alaska and Sen. Thad Cochran of Mississippi, both Republicans, according to preliminary reviews of fiscal 2008 spending bills by nonpartisan Taxpayers for Common Sense. Two of the House's three biggest claimants of earmarks also are Republicans: C.W. Bill Young of Florida and Jerry Lewis of California, the group found.

Their continued success at steering billions of taxpayer dollars to their constituents is all the more impressive — or arguably hypocritical — because President Bush and other prominent Republicans sharpened their criticisms of earmarks after Democrats took over the House and Senate majorities in January.

Given that these Republicans have been outraged by the "bloated" budgets of the Democratic majority, perhaps they could have sacrificed their 40% of the pork pie so that some of these other priorities (see SCHIP or the Iraq War) could have been more affordable.

Another bit of contention is the constant brow beating of the Democrats by this Republican President:

Congressional leaders "have not made enough progress" in curbing earmarks, Mr. Bush said. He said his budget director will "review options for dealing with the wasteful spending in the omnibus bill."

Democrats this year shed more light on the earmarking process and reduced its overall cost. Still, about 9,000 earmarks costing $7.4 billion are in the final spending measure.

Perhaps, before Bush blasts the Democratic Congress for improper spending, he will also chastise his own party for partaking in pork with every bit the vigor that Democrats partake. Also, he really might want to examine the previous six years in which he signed each and every pork laden spending bill that floated across his desk. It looks pretty petty when you begin to care about pork spending only when the people in charge are of the opposite party persuasion.

Finally, our very own Michele Bachmann delivered the weekly radio address for the Republicans and made this statement:

because Republican reforms brought more transparency to the budget, taxpayers can now see and scrutinize just how their hard to come by money is being spent, even when Democrats put their budgets together in the dead of night earlier this week.

So, either Michele Bachmann doesn't understand the difference between Republican and Democrat or she is lying because any person with a modem and a search engine could show you that it was a bill sponsored by a Democrat which provided the transparency with which we now see the big spenders in the Republican Party.

I enjoy a good laugh as much as the next guy, and Leo Pusateri over at Psycmeistr has got one of the most humorous posts I think I have ever seen in my entire life. Granted, Leo may not have intended it to draw the "laugh at me" crowd with this one but the mere premise of his argument is so partisan and so out there that one can only read it as humor ala Stephen Colbert. If I didn't know any better I would have assumed that he was one of the greatest satirists this country has ever seen.

Go ahead, share a laugh with me on a Monday:

Class... vs. no class.

From inviting Teddy Kennedy for movie night, to allowing the democrats to write his education plan, President Bush has bent over backward to implement the "new tone" he set to implement in Washington.

I'm just curious, Leo, but would that new tone be creating war with faulty intelligence, playing politics with the Justice Department, an unwillingness to compromise, or simply insulting Democrats at every turn? I could go on with issues such as waterboarding, illegal wiretapping, and the like but I think we get the purpose of this "new tone".

Yet, the money line comes next:

"Say what you want about Bush, but he has been gracious in all things, resorting to criticism of his opponents in only the most dire of situations. Despite attack after virulent attack, President Bush, honoring his office, has again and again taken the high road, not allowing his office to wallow in the pit of hyper-partisan politics."
If what I have seen from this administration over the last seven years is taking the high road, I would NOT want to see what that low road is all about!

Thank You Leo! You made my Monday a little brighter with your amazing satirical skill!

This one's for you Leo:

Step One: Use a highly popular and highly successful government program to illustrate your point that government is too big and threaten to VETO it.

George W. Bush (and you can be sure Michele Bachmann will be following him like a lovesick puppy) has done just that. So, it begs the question, is George TRYING to destroy the Republican Party?
The President calls it playing politics, yet the measure has support from both Republicans and Democrats. So, Mr. President, if a bill is bipartisan and you still threaten to veto it, who is playing politics with the health care of children?

Once again, Mr. President, you are on the wrong side of public opinion!
